The Cereal Spot

The Cereal Spot is a place that childhood breakfast dreams are made of. When I first walked in, I was hit with a wave of nostalgia, while also incredibly excited to take my young nephews there to experience it as well. The inside is vibrantly decorated with all the famous cereal cartoon characters and cereal box-shaped tables, and smells delicious!

You order cereal from the “bar” to the restaurant’s left and pay at the counter while they make your concoction in front of you. There are about 70 different varieties of cereal to choose from. Some that you haven’t thought of in 20 years, and ones you have never even seen before! With 14 different kinds of ice cream and toppings and 8 milk varieties, the options seem overwhelming. But have no fear, you can mix and match to become your own “cereal chef.”

The staff is super friendly and happy to help with suggestions. I had a hard time deciding if I wanted to go the chocolatey route or fruity route, but I settled on a combination of Cookie Crisp, Cinnamon Toast Crunch, and Captain Crunch, with almond milk.

Of course, I went with the sugary deliciousness that I used to have as a kid, but you can choose some healthier options and add their fresh fruit toppings!

Along with the cereal bar, they have a bunch of novelty snacks that you can take to-go. Some options include a fruity Pebble cheesecake taco, and homemade Rice Krispie treats from locally-owned The Sweet Whisk. I was also told that they would soon be partnering with a local donut shop for one-of-a-kind donut flavors – so we will have to be on the look out for that announcement soon.

All-in-all, The Cereal Spot is a refreshing option on Hertel for both the under-21 crowd and for adults who want a nostalgic treat! With so many concoctions, you will for sure want to come back for more.

Parkside Meadow

Turkey Club
Turkey Club

Located across the street from the Buffalo Zoo, Parkside Meadow is the definition of your neighborhood pub. Originally a candy and cigar store in the 50’s, it had been vacant for 30 years when a local couple purchased the building and turned it in to a history-rich restaurant with casual food and drinks.

It is nice how kid friendly the restaurant is. On this particular day I met some of my family members after they spent the morning at the zoo. The server immediately brought over some crayons to entertain the kids so the adults could enjoy a refreshing mimosa!

Hummus Wrap

The menu has many sandwich, salad, and comfort food entrees. I ordered the Hummus wrap with lettuce, tomato, cucumber and delicious sesame dressing. It tasted really fresh and the french fries were perfectly crisp.

The rest of the table ordered a turkey Reuben on grilled rye, and the Russel St Turkey club with applewood smoked bacon, lettuce, tomato, dill mayo & topped with a fried egg on grilled sourdough. The kids had grilled cheese sandwiches which I may have stolen a couple bites…

Chocolate Peanut Butter Dessert

At the end of our meal, we were surprised with a peanut butter chocolate cake because the server overheard that we were celebrating a birthday. These small touches really add to the experience and we are likely to come back sooner rather than later!

Parkside Meadow is located at 2 Russell Street.

Perks Cafe

Avocado Toast

Ok I’m just going to say it… Perks Cafe has the best avocado toast in Buffalo. With goat cheese and sriracha…it’s what my dreams are made of!

The location is very large compared to many cafe’s in the area. I have been here a couple times with my running group (shout out to Studio Sophia!) and there is always plenty of room for all of us. Lots of people socializing or just coming in for a coffee while reading a book.

Southwest Breakfast Burrito

Along with the avocado toast, we ordered the Southwest Breakfast Burrito with turkey sausage. With pepper jack cheese and sriracha, it definitely has a spicy kick to it!

Perks Cafe has a decent sized coffee and signature drink menu, all using locally roasted coffee beans. On this hot day I ordered the Iced Jamaican Me Crazy coffee which was refreshing with a yummy hint of cinnamon flavor. No cream or sugar necessary!

I need to come back again soon to try out their lunch menu. It looks healthy enough with delicious ingredients. The Cranberry Apple Chicken Salad Wrap is on my radar to try out next.
