Local Kitchen & Beer Bar

buffalove.jpgLocal is one of my favorite downtown restaurants. In my opinion, Chippewa is getting a new vibe, moving away from the club-only, underage drinking that it used to be. Of course, those clubs still exist but more and more restaurants are popping up making it a more civilized scene for everyone to enjoy! (Did I just make myself sound old?!) Local Kitchen and Beer Bar is definitely one of the game changers.

First, the atmosphere is more chill, with repurposed wood from an old local barn covering the walls and bar. The menu boasts local vendors and 716 inspired dishes. Obviously, with the name of the restaurant, they have a multitude of beer options available on draft which is typically what I go for.

Beef on Weck and Wings
Local Platter

The Beef on Weck Egg Roll appetizer is one of my favorites. Just something so unique and delicious, with a side of horsey sauce that gives it a kick! Other Buffalo staples include their Local Platter with a Beef on Weck Sandwich and 5 wings with french fries, and on Friday’s you can get their Rusty Chain beer battered Fish Fry.

You also can’t go wrong when ordering any of the sandwiches or salads (if healthy is what you are looking for!). If you are gluten-free, they have gluten-free pasta and buns that you can substitute to still enjoy the menu.

Local will continue to be one of my go-to spots downtown and a great place to bring out-of-towners to sample all the local favorite foods. Stop on by and let me know what you ordered!!

Cole’s Brunch

Mimosa

I’m a sucker for brunch. Especially a brunch with good mimosa specials! Cole’s is one of my favorite Sunday brunch spots not only because they are a Buffalo staple, but they have $12 mimosa carafes and a creative Bloody Mary menu with about 10 different options.

We were able to grab a table on the patio on this gorgeous sunny day. Always good people watching on Elmwood!

Huevos Rancheros

Coles has a huge brunch menu with many different sweet and savory menu items. I normally go sweet, but this time I went savory with the Huevos Rancheros – fried eggs smothered with ranchero sauce, cheddar cheese, yellow Rice, black Beans, and Pico De Gallo. Seriously to die for.

My friend ordered the Aztec Benedict which is a twist on a traditional benedict with a poached egg and Canadian bacon on an English muffin but topped with an avocado & chipotle hollandaise, served with a side of home fries.

Other options on the brunch menu include a hangover burrito, breakfast panini, orange cinnamon french toast, burgers, and salads. Something for everyone!

I highly recommend checking out Coles Sunday brunch. They also have a great dinner menu – check back for a blog post on that soon!

Coles is located at 1104 Elmwood Ave.

Allen Burger Venture

ABV Tater Tots
Tater Tots

Allen Burger Venture (ABV) is definitely my go-to restaurant for burgers. They have a large selection with impressive ingredient options – not just your plain old lettuce and tomato!

If I’m being honest, I order the same burger every single time. But since I knew I was writing a blog post about the food this time around, I was excited to try a different option for a change. Luckily for me, my friend was willing to split two burgers so I was able to stick with my usual and still try something new.

We started with the tater tots, served with an applewood bacon & scallion sour cream, and a cider apple sauce. I was only going to try one or two and then next think I know… the plate was empty. So good!

Delicious Burgers

For the burgers we shared the number 3 (Caramelized “ommegang” onions & applewood bacon, porter cheddar) and my usual number 5 (“Jiffy” peanut butter, pickled jalapenos, applewood bacon, white cheddar). The caramelized onions really made the burger; I was happy I tried it and would get it again!  For the number 5, I know that peanut butter with jalapenos sounds like it would be a weird combo, but it is seriously delicious and not overly hot.

Zombie Killer Cider

I also have to mention that ABV has an awesome craft beer selection. This is great, because it is typically packed in the restaurant so you sometimes need to have a drink while waiting for a table. I tried the Zombie Killer Cider on draft. Super refreshing and perfect for sipping on the patio on a beautiful day!

ABV is located at 175 Allen. Check out their full menu here.
